Khabib Nurmagomedov Criticizes Islam Makhachev's Reaction to Ian Machado Garry's Compliment
During the UFC 330 pre-fight press conference, a moment of unexpected tension arose between UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev and contender Ian Machado Garry. While Makhachev was discussing the influence of his late coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Garry interjected to express his admiration and stated how proud the coach would have been of Makhachev.
In response to Garry's praise, Makhachev abruptly told him to "Shut up." This reaction did not sit well with Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev's long-time mentor and friend.
In a recent appearance on "Anatomy of a Fighter," Nurmagomedov shared his disappointment with Makhachev's behavior. He commented on Makhachev's communication skills, joking about the English classes he provided, and advised Makhachev to be more gracious, even towards those he dislikes. "Ian Garry, who was talking very nicely about him, and [Islam] says 'Shut up'. Be nice, brother," Nurmagomedov stated. "Sometimes, when you don’t like somebody, and they give you respect, at least be quiet. Don’t say, ‘Shut up.'"
Makhachev appeared unfazed by Nurmagomedov's critique as he proceeded with his final preparations for UFC 330, where a victory would set a new UFC record for the longest winning streak, surpassing Anderson Silva.
It's worth noting that Garry has drawn criticism from other fighters recently, including welterweight Uros Medic, who took issue with Garry's views on universal female leadership.
