British Tennis Update: Choinski and Norrie Eliminated, Draper Advances at Cincinnati Open

The Cincinnati Open saw mixed fortunes for British tennis players on Thursday. Jan Choinski and Cameron Norrie were both eliminated in the first round, while Jack Draper secured his progression to the next stage.

Jan Choinski's challenging match against Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante concluded with Choinski's defeat. The contest was intense, with all three sets requiring tie-breaks. Tirante ultimately prevailed with a score of 7-6 (11-9), 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-4) after nearly three hours of play, sending the world number 77 home.

Cameron Norrie, the British number two, experienced a tough first set, being broken once to lose it 3-6 against Croatia's Dino Prizmic. However, Norrie staged a comeback in the subsequent sets, winning 6-1, 6-4 to advance. The world number 37, who recently reached the semi-finals in Los Cabos, will now face Wimbledon runner-up Alexander Zverev in the second round.

Jack Draper's match against Martin Landaluce was also a hard-fought affair. Draper led 5-2 in the second set, but the young Spaniard, Landaluce, rallied to win the next five games, securing a 6-3, 7-5 victory. This marks a significant challenge for Draper, who was competing in his first match since a visibly emotional return from injury last week. Despite holding set points, Draper couldn't close out the second set, finishing with 47 unforced errors and 12 double faults against the world number 64.

This tournament is Draper's second match since June, having recently lost to Terence Atmane at the Canadian Open. A persistent arm injury has plagued Draper, causing his ranking to drop significantly from world number four to as low as 160th over the past year. He has also had to withdraw from scheduled tournaments due to lingering shoulder issues and bone bruising sustained at the US Open last August.

Although Draper did not appear injured during his match against Landaluce, fatigue seemed to set in during the second set, and his confidence appeared to waver once the score became tied at 5-5. To address his ongoing injury concerns, Draper has recently sought the expertise of biomechanics specialist Carlos Cano, a renowned figure who has previously assisted Arthur Fery in reaching the British number one ranking.
