Jon Anik Defends Ian Machado Garry's Underrated Status Ahead of UFC 330 Title Fight
Jon Anik, a long-standing play-by-play commentator for the UFC, has voiced his confusion regarding the lack of widespread fan support for welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry. Anik believes Garry is an "underappreciated" talent whose skills are often overshadowed by external factors.
Ian Machado Garry is set to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 330. Makhachev, aiming to extend his impressive winning streak and surpass Anderson Silva's record, faces Garry in a highly anticipated bout.
Leading up to UFC 330, Garry has encountered significant fan disapproval. This sentiment was palpable at the UFC 330 press conference, where he received a lukewarm reception. Despite his strong performances within the Octagon, many UFC fans have been critical of Garry due to matters unrelated to his fighting abilities.
Anik Questions Fan Criticism of Garry
During a recent episode of "The Anik & Florian Podcast," Jon Anik discussed the negative sentiment surrounding Garry. "He really has been underappreciated by every pocket of this fanbase that would rather focus on his wife and other things," Anik stated.
Anik acknowledged that Garry's behavior, such as his assertive conduct in fighter meetings and his willingness to extend interviews, has drawn criticism. However, he emphasized Garry's positive attributes and career trajectory. "I absolutely love him and when I look at his legacy on paper, the loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov was wicked competitive. He’s 17-1, he’s put in all the right work, he’s aligned with Diego Lima and Charles Oliveira," Anik explained. He concluded, "I just feel like he’s done so many things right and everybody focuses on maybe some things he hasn’t done well verbally."
