Rybakina Secures Miami Open Semifinal Spot After Triumph Over Pegula
Elena Rybakina has advanced to the Miami Open semifinals, marking her fifth consecutive victory against Jessica Pegula with a hard-fought score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion, was a finalist at the Miami Open in 2023. Her American adversary, Pegula, also reached the championship match in the previous year's tournament.
The match saw a commanding start from the 32-year-old Pegula, who established a formidable 4-0 lead en route to claiming the first set. However, Rybakina, 26, mounted a powerful comeback, unleashing 15 aces and successfully defending eight out of ten break points to ultimately seize control of the match.
In the upcoming semifinal round, Rybakina is set to face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka, in a highly anticipated rematch of the Australian Open final, or the unseeded American talent, Hailey Baptiste.
Reflecting on her win, Rybakina commented, "Playing against Jessica is consistently challenging. She started the match exceptionally well, and I found myself rushing and feeling frustrated. Nevertheless, I am pleased that I managed to regain my composure and turn the match around in the second set."
The other women's semifinal, scheduled for Thursday, will feature American fourth seed Coco Gauff battling against Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic.
Should Gauff emerge victorious and reach the final, she stands to climb to third in the WTA rankings next week, surpassing former world number one Iga Swiatek.
Meanwhile, in the men's singles draw, Jiri Lehecka triumphed over unseeded Spaniard Martin Landaluce with a score of 7-6 (7-1), 7-5, earning his place in the semifinals.
The 21st-seeded Czech player will compete against either Tommy Paul or Arthur Fils for an opportunity to secure a spot in the final.
