Nvidia Stock Surges on Strong AI Demand Forecast
Nvidia's stock experienced a significant surge on Thursday, with shares rising approximately 7.4% in premarket trading. This upward trend followed the chip giant's latest earnings report and revenue guidance, which reassured investors about the sustained strength of Artificial Intelligence (AI) demand. The positive investor sentiment suggests that Nvidia may break its previous pattern of stock declines on the day after earnings announcements, even when financial estimates are met or exceeded.
The positive momentum extended to related companies, with neocloud firms Nebius and CoreWeave also seeing gains in premarket trading, up around 7.5% and 6% respectively.
Nvidia's Chief Financial Officer, Colette Kress, projected a 70% revenue growth for fiscal year 2028. CEO Jensen Huang further emphasized the strong demand, stating it exceeds 70%, though he acknowledged production constraints limit the company's supply capabilities.
Nvidia's primary manufacturer, TSMC, continues to grapple with supply chain challenges. Additionally, memory chips, a crucial component for Nvidia's systems, remain in short supply.
Analysts have also noted potential competition emerging for Nvidia's leading position in advanced AI chips. Custom semiconductors recently announced by hyperscalers and AI labs like OpenAI could pose a future threat.
Nvidia Boosts AI Optimism
Huang indicated that Nvidia has "much greater visibility now" across the supply chain, allowing for more accurate long-term forecasting, a practice not previously undertaken by the company.
This optimistic outlook from Nvidia comes at a time when investors are expressing concerns about capital expenditures by major tech companies, the nature of financing deals, and the return on AI investments. Nvidia's commentary on AI demand appears to have alleviated some of these anxieties.
Huang declared that AI has "reached its inflection point," highlighting a substantial increase in the number of companies requiring large clusters of GPUs. He observed a shift from a single major lab driving GPU demand last year to a current "golden age" with numerous AI labs and startups scaling in parallel, a robust open-model ecosystem, and the emergence of physical AI applications globally.
The company also aimed to demonstrate diversification in its customer base, extending beyond hyperscalers. Sales from Nvidia's AI Clouds, Industrial, and Enterprise (ACIE) customers reached $40.3 billion in the latest quarter, marking a 138% year-over-year increase.
According to Siddy Jobe, senior portfolio manager at Exponential Technologies Fund, Nvidia's current valuation is "cheap," with significant upside potential in its stock.
Despite a market correction in July that saw chip stocks lose $1 trillion before recovering, Nvidia's earnings report has rekindled investor confidence.
Paul Meeks, head of technology research at Freedom Capital Markets, expressed strong optimism for Nvidia and the broader AI ecosystem, suggesting a slowdown is unlikely before 2028 at the earliest.
