Bank of Korea Delivers Second Consecutive Rate Hike as Core Inflation Remains High

August 27, 2026Pablo Navarro1 мин

South Korea's central bank has once again increased interest rates, marking the second consecutive hike, in an effort to curb escalating prices. This decision follows a report indicating that core inflation reached its highest point since December 2023 last month.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, bringing it to 3%. This marks the highest rate since January 2025 and aligns with market expectations.

The latest rate increase comes as core inflation in Asia's fourth-largest economy climbed to 2.6% in July. While the overall inflation rate saw a slight cooling to 2.8% in July, it had been on an upward trend each month from February to June.

In its previous meeting, the BOK communicated the necessity of maintaining a policy stance conducive to further rate increases, citing persistent cost pressures and accelerating housing prices in Seoul and its surrounding regions.

Housing prices in Seoul experienced a significant month-on-month increase of 2.5% in June, representing the largest jump in five years, according to reporting from Asia Business Daily.

The BOK also noted projections of robust growth in both exports and domestic demand, bolstered by positive spillover effects from the nation's semiconductor industry.

Consequently, the central bank anticipates that inflation will remain above its 2% target for an extended period.
