HP Licenses Huawei's WiFi Technology Despite U.S. Blacklisting
US-based computing and printing company HP has established a multi-year global licensing agreement with Chinese tech giant Huawei, focusing on certain WiFi patents held by Huawei. This collaboration signifies the growing acceptance of Huawei's technology beyond China, even in the face of U.S. sanctions imposed in 2019, which have limited Huawei's access to American suppliers like Google.
The agreement follows a prior patent dispute involving HP, Huawei, and other entities. This dispute concluded last fall with an arrangement that granted HP access to a collection of approximately 2,000 patents related to wireless network connectivity. Huawei played a foundational role in the formation of this patent pool, known as Sisvel WiFi 6.
Steven Geiszler, who represented Huawei in the negotiations, stated that the recent global cross-licensing deal includes significant reciprocal patent rights from HP. Geiszler, previously a senior in-house intellectual property lawyer for Huawei in Texas for almost a decade, recently launched his own firm with Huawei as his primary client.
HP is slated to announce its quarterly earnings on Thursday morning Beijing time. The company emerged as a separate entity in 2015 when Hewlett-Packard Company was divided into two distinct businesses.
