Nintendo has announced the release date for Splatoon Raiders, the upcoming title for Switch 2. The game will be launched on July 23rd, accompanied by a newly released trailer.
Raiders is described as a new Splatoon experience that is “primarily for a single player,” marking a significant departure from the original trilogy, which is largely known for its multiplayer focus. While the core gameplay of shooting and inking remains, the objective shifts from territorial conquest by teams to exploring an open map, the Spiral Islands. Players will embark on a quest to discover hidden treasures while fending off attacks from Salmonids.
“Play as a mechanist and team up with the Surimi Clan, a trio of intrepid musicians, as you explore the mysterious Spiral Islands in search of fabulous riches,” according to the official website. “Customize your character’s appearance, equip yourself with all sorts of mechanical gadgets and ink-spewing weapons, and confront the Salmonids who will try to make your life difficult with their constant attacks.”
While the trailer may not be the most groundbreaking, Splatoon’s unique charm is undeniable. The concept of a single-player Splatoon (even if “primarily”) has always held appeal. Past experiments, like the Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2, which is considered the series’ best DLC, have proven that a compelling game can be crafted even without a strong multiplayer component. Raiders faces the challenge of adapting its structure to accommodate the new single-player scale, and it remains to be seen how well the game’s proposed setup, which hints at elements from previous installments, will synergize with Splatoon’s core mechanics.
Attention is also drawn to the game’s key art, a vast image measuring 9500 pixels wide, offering a potential for an impressive poster print.
