The animosity between Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland was palpable as they finally stood face-to-face ahead of their upcoming fight. What began as verbal sparring has escalated into a deeply personal rivalry, with both fighters engaging in constant exchanges through interviews and social media.
This Saturday, these bitter rivals will have the opportunity to settle their feud in the Octagon. Chimaev will defend his middleweight title against Strickland in the main event of UFC 328, taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The lead-up to the fight has been characterized by relentless trash talk, personal insults, and escalating threats from both sides throughout UFC 328 fight week. Due to heightened tensions and concerns about potential altercations, the UFC significantly increased security and largely kept Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev apart behind the scenes.
However, the moment the two rivals finally met on Thursday, chaos ensued.
Sean Strickland’s Reaction to Khamzat Chimaev’s Kick During Tense UFC 328 Staredown
Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev shared the same stage for the first time during Thursday’s UFC 328 pre-fight press conference, and the tension was immediate. Even before they could sit down, the fighters were engaged in heated exchanges, prompting security to intervene and keep them separated.
The tension continued to mount throughout the press conference, with both middleweights exchanging personal and profanity-laced insults. The situation reached a boiling point during the post-event faceoff when Chimaev unexpectedly kicked Strickland. This action immediately drew security guards and police officers onto the stage to separate the two fighters and prevent further escalation.
Following the chaotic incident, Strickland took to social media, stating he had anticipated such an action and labeled the undefeated fighter a “coward.”
Strickland posted on X: “Exactly what I expected a coward to do.”
While it initially seemed Chimaev had kicked Strickland in the knee, UFC CEO Dana White later provided a different account during an appearance on Nina Marie Daniele’s KICK stream. White suggested that the outspoken American was actually struck in the groin.
