Former Barcelona defender Sergiño Dest has revealed that some of his ex-teammates, specifically Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, did not comprehend the club’s decision to sell him. Dest, who played for Barcelona for two seasons before loan spells at AC Milan and a subsequent permanent move to PSV Eindhoven in 2023, featured in 72 matches for the Catalan club, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
Dest expressed his openness to returning to Barcelona, stating that signing for the club would “still be a dream.” He believes he would fit well into Hansi Flick’s coaching style.
After falling out of favor under Xavi Hernandez, Dest departed Barcelona. He shared that Araujo and De Jong have occasionally remarked that they “don’t understand why I was sold, that I would fit in well here.”
Despite having a contract with PSV Eindhoven until 2028, Dest admitted he is seeking a move this summer. He desires to challenge himself in a larger league, stating, “I want to be able to improve every week in a bigger league and compete against the best.” While there is interest from other clubs, nothing concrete has materialized yet.
Dest reflected positively on his performance in the 2023-24 season with PSV, noting that he played “very well and maintained a consistent level.” However, his season was significantly limited by a serious knee injury sustained after his transfer, restricting him to just 375 minutes of play.
Currently, Barcelona’s full-back options include Joao Cancelo, Alejandro Balde, and Jules Kounde. The club hopes to make Cancelo’s move permanent. There has been limited discussion regarding a replacement for Kounde at right-back, although selling him for the right offer has been considered.
