U.S. National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion, Doubling in a Decade
The U.S. government's debt has now surpassed the $40 trillion mark, reaching a new and significant financial milestone. As of Tuesday, the total outstanding debt stood at approximately $40.05 trillion, a level achieved just over four and a half years after crossing the $30 trillion threshold.
This substantial increase in debt is largely attributed to years of persistent budget deficits. The Covid-19 pandemic further exacerbated this trend with extensive stimulus funding, pushing the publicly held portion of the debt to nearly 100% of the total.
The Treasury Department's latest monthly report revealed a $432.3 billion deficit for July, marking the largest monthly shortfall since March 2021. The year-to-date deficit is approaching $1.8 trillion, which is an increase compared to the same period last year.
For perspective, the national debt stood at $19.4 trillion just ten years ago, underscoring a dramatic doubling in debt levels within a single decade.
The current U.S. fiscal landscape is having a noticeable impact on the markets. This has prompted the Treasury Department to announce an increase in the size of its repurchase operations for longer-term debt instruments.
Treasury yields have experienced a sharp rise since late June, reaching levels not seen since before the global financial crisis. During that crisis, the Federal Reserve had lowered benchmark interest rates to near zero and initiated a large-scale bond repurchase program to help suppress rates.
However, several factors are currently contributing to the upward pressure on yields. These include concerns about the growing debt and deficit, a surge in corporate bond issuance driven by investments in artificial intelligence, rising term premiums, and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve's commitment to controlling inflation.
With the Federal Reserve adopting a cautious approach to interest rate adjustments, awaiting more data on inflation and the labor market, the government's borrowing costs have escalated significantly. This year, the interest paid on the national debt has amounted to nearly $1.2 trillion, making it the largest budget expenditure after Social Security and Medicare.
