Japan Exports Beat Estimates in July as Robust Chip Shipments Power Fifth Straight Month of Gains
Japan's exports in July experienced their fastest growth since October 2022, exceeding forecasts, largely propelled by continued strong shipments of semiconductor-related products. This marks the fifth consecutive month of export expansion.
Overall export growth reached 23.2%, surpassing the 19.9% estimated by economists. Shipments of semiconductor equipment, in particular, saw a significant 49.1% increase in value, a trend attributed to the ongoing artificial intelligence boom and sustained demand.
In terms of key trading partners, exports to China, Japan's largest market, rose by 25.8%. Shipments to the United States also showed robust growth, climbing by 22%.
These strong export figures have been a crucial factor in supporting Japan's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In the second quarter, the Japanese economy grew by 0.7% year-on-year, an improvement from the 0.5% growth in the first quarter. While GDP growth on a quarter-on-quarter and annualized basis fell short of expectations, the performance of exports helped mitigate the impact, making the sector a significant contributor to economic expansion.
Imports also saw a notable increase, rising by 27.8% in July, reaching their highest level since November 2022 and exceeding analysts' predictions of a 26.5% rise. This surge was significantly influenced by a 87.8% jump in petroleum imports by value, driven by rising oil prices, partly due to geopolitical events.
