Former UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes has reportedly suffered a serious injury, losing the tip of his middle finger.
While the exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear, Hughes, also known as “Country Boy,” posted a picture from a hospital visit on his Instagram account. He captioned the image, “Luckily, God’s been real good to me… He left me nine more to work with. 😆.”
Matt Hughes is widely recognized as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. He held the UFC Welterweight Championship twice and was inducted into both the UFC Hall of Fame and the NJCAA Hall of Fame. During his time in the UFC, Hughes achieved two separate six-fight winning streaks, overcoming all contenders in the welterweight division. He was the eighth individual to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in May 2010.
This incident follows a previous severe head injury Hughes sustained on June 16, 2017, when his truck was struck by a train at a railway crossing near his home in Montgomery County, Illinois. He was in a medically induced coma for 19 days and has described the injury as the “worst brain injury possible,” a Grade 3 diffuse axonal brain injury.
