The Pokémon Company has confirmed the release date for Pokémon Champions, a free-to-play battle-focused game aiming to become the central competitive platform for the series. The Nintendo Switch version is set to launch on April 8th; the mobile version, announced concurrently with the console version, will also be released this year, though its exact date is yet to be determined.

The good news is that the game looks promising. According to recent previews, Champions appears to be taking steps to separate high-level competitive play from some of the series' traditional "tyrannies," such as Pokémon breeding. The flexibility in team building and in-depth customization of individual Pokémon could offer a breath of fresh air for a game that has always performed well but remains less accessible than it could be due to its opaque mechanics and systems, which often only make sense within the specific logic of the main Nintendo titles.

The bad news is that, being a free-to-play title, the game seems riddled with traps designed to entice players into spending money. With battle passes, starter packs, monthly subscriptions, not to mention the separate cost of Pokémon Home, there will be ample opportunities for financial outlay in Champions. Beyond these direct payments, I'm concerned that the very dynamic of building your ideal team could create a stressful experience. Aside from payments and subscriptions, Pokémon are "lent" to you, and you must invest points earned through battling to keep the ones that fit your strategy. You have one week to do this before they disappear forever. There's something very delicate about these economies, which can often be tainted by the introduction of time-sensitive pressure – the feeling of "losing" something if you don't achieve an objective before the opportunity vanishes. I'm still unsure what to make of this specific system and the balancing act required to make the game fair for both those who can and cannot afford the various payments.
