Arsenal’s chances of reaching the Champions League final could be significantly impacted, as star midfielder Declan Rice may face a ban for the crucial second leg against Atletico Madrid. The first-leg semi-final ended in a 1-1 draw, setting up a tense return fixture.
While Atletico Madrid has received positive news regarding the fitness of Julian Alvarez, Giuliano Simeone, and Alexander Sorloth for the Emirates Stadium clash, Arsenal might be without their influential midfielder. Reports from The Times, as cited by Diario AS, suggest that Declan Rice could be suspended.
The controversy stems from a penalty decision in the first half of the initial match. Arsenal personnel were reportedly frustrated when a penalty awarded to Mikel Arteta’s side was overturned, which could have given them a 2-1 lead. Rice voiced his strong opinions on the matter, suggesting that the referee, Danny Makkelie, was swayed by the vocal home crowd at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Rice stated, “UEFA is totally different. In both areas you have to be very careful, because they whistle absolutely everything. The second, that of Eberechi Eze, is a clear penalty. I don’t know how they didn’t whistle it. I think the fans provoked the decision and made the referee change his mind.”
UEFA to Investigate Rice’s Remarks
According to the reports, UEFA will now review the referee’s report. They will assess whether Rice’s comments question the integrity of the officials. If found to have committed an offense, Rice could face sanctions, including a potential ban for the upcoming second leg if a decision is reached before the match.
Atletico Madrid would likely welcome the absence of Rice, who is a vital player for Arsenal. However, the investigation is still in its early stages, and any ruling is not expected for several days.
