Atletico Madrid is in the market for at least one, potentially two or three forwards this summer, contingent on player sales. Julian Alvarez continues to draw interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and there’s a possibility of Alexander Sorloth departing the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Sorloth has been a key player for Diego Simeone’s team since his arrival from Villarreal two years ago. However, club management is now open to parting ways with the Norwegian international. Should he leave, a replacement with a similar profile would be sought.
This is where Nick Woltemade could become a target. Atletico Madrid showed interest in him last summer when he was still at Stuttgart. According to BILD (via Diario AS), they are prepared to pursue him again, given his increasingly uncertain future at Newcastle United.
Woltemade has experienced a challenging debut season in the Premier League. Although he started strongly, he has seen limited playing time as a striker in recent months, and when he has featured, it’s often been in a midfield role. This has led to his dissatisfaction, making a potential exit a realistic prospect.
Woltemade could be an ideal Sorloth replacement
Newcastle United invested over €75 million to sign Woltemade last summer, and it’s likely they would seek a similar fee for his departure. This presents a challenge for Atletico Madrid. However, if they can secure at least €30-35 million from the sale of Sorloth, they could bridge the gap using their existing funds.
If they manage to retain Alvarez, pairing him with Woltemade in Simeone’s 4-4-2 formation could be an exciting prospect for Atletico supporters. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether a formal pursuit of this deal will materialize in the summer.
