Getafe has taken a significant stride towards European qualification by defeating a struggling RCD Mallorca side at the Coliseum. Mallorca’s early errors proved costly, hindering their ability to gain traction in the match. This victory brings Jose Bordalas closer to achieving a second European qualification during his current tenure with Getafe.
The visiting team initially displayed ambition, adopting a direct and high-pressing approach. This strategy created the first scoring opportunity for Zito Luvumbo, who unfortunately couldn’t convert after good work from Jan Virgili. Both managers fielded young players, with Damian Caceres featuring in midfield for the home side and Luis Orejuela at left-back for Mallorca. The opening goal stemmed directly from a mistake by Orejuela.
A misplaced clearance by Orejuela allowed Allan Nyom to gain momentum. His unchallenged cross into the box found Martin Satriano at the far post, who tapped it in. The crowd at the Coliseum responded with chants for Nyom, a popular 38-year-old Cameroonian making a rare start.
Mallorca, like many teams facing Getafe, struggled to establish their rhythm, misplacing passes on occasion. However, a corner just before the half-hour mark almost brought them level when Vedat Muriqi’s header struck the underside of the crossbar, offering a glimmer of hope. Another dangerous set piece unsettled the Getafe defense, and a clever touch from Muriqi released Luvumbo behind the defense once more, but Zaid Romero managed to dispossess him just in time.
Just as Mallorca appeared to be finding their footing, Getafe struck again. Indecisive play between Orejuela and Martin Valjent led to a long ball bouncing. When Valjent attempted to head the ball back to goalkeeper Leo Roman, he misjudged it, nodding it over the disoriented keeper. Satriano, alert and in position, capitalized by poking the ball into an empty net.
Getafe Controls the Game, Securing a Vital Win
The second half began with a midfield battle, a scenario likely favored by Getafe manager Bordalas. Around the hour mark, Zaid Romero bundled in a set piece, extending Getafe’s lead to 3-0. While Mallorca’s spirits seemed to falter, Omar Mascarell managed to pull one back two minutes later, also converting from a set piece.
Despite the late goal, the match proceeded without further significant incident. The following twenty minutes saw no saves from either goalkeeper, with Getafe content to defend their two-goal cushion, which significantly bolsters their European qualification prospects. This victory propels Getafe four points clear of Real Sociedad, their closest challenger for seventh place and a Conference League spot.
Conversely, Demichelis’ side now sits 17th, only above the relegation zone on goal difference. Girona needs just one point from their upcoming match against Real Sociedad on Thursday to leapfrog Mallorca. The islanders leave the Coliseum with a sense of frustration and helplessness. Two of Getafe’s goals were the result of critical defensive errors, and after gifting Getafe an early advantage, Mallorca struggled to recover. They face Levante in Valencia this weekend, while Getafe travels to Elche, another team battling relegation.
