While it’s confirmed that Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the current season, there is optimism regarding his availability for the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team. Yamal sustained a hamstring injury in the recent 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo, with his recovery expected to take approximately five weeks. This timeline is anticipated to allow him sufficient time to regain full fitness before the tournament commences in mid-June.
Although missing the end of the season is not ideal for Yamal, as it would have provided him with valuable match practice and momentum heading into the summer tournament, the primary focus for “La Roja” is ensuring the 18-year-old is fit for their opening fixture against Cape Verde.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, was questioned about Lamine Yamal’s condition. He also commented on the situation of Nico Williams, Yamal’s national team counterpart on the wing, who has also faced recent injury setbacks.
“They are both crucial players for us, but so are others. For us, the day-to-day is important. We desire the same commitment. Hopefully, we will see the Spain of Lamine and Nico, but what truly matters is that this is a family, and we value the collective outcome. Nico is already nearing his peak form, and I am confident Lamine will too, God willing. The most critical aspect is for everyone to arrive healthy.”
De la Fuente Confirms 26-Man Squad is Almost Finalized
In addition to the injury updates, de la Fuente also confirmed during the press conference that he is nearing the completion of the 26-player squad for the upcoming summer tournament in North America.
“The best news is that the squad is consolidated, nearly finalized. It’s a group that functions well. I hope that in the coming weeks, there will be no setbacks in the form of injuries. I hope there are no medium or long-term injuries. We have a group already formed, and the last three or four spots can fluctuate due to injury concerns. There is still time, and I hope that those who are injured manage to recover.”
