Shift Up to Self-Publish Stellar Blade Sequel for More Direct and Effective Player Communication

Sports news » Shift Up to Self-Publish Stellar Blade Sequel for More Direct and Effective Player Communication

South Korean company Shift Up, known for the popular titles Stellar Blade and Nikke, has revealed its future strategies following a positive first fiscal quarter. Beyond their ongoing work with renowned Japanese game designer Shinji Mikami, Shift Up announced a significant shift in their publishing approach: the sequel to Stellar Blade will be self-published by Shift Up, diverging from the original’s partnership with Sony.

Development of the Stellar Blade sequel is reportedly progressing smoothly. This move signifies Shift Up’s transition to a “first-party service model.” The company aims to communicate the unique appeal of its game universe to players more directly and effectively, a confidence bolstered by the strong fanbase and established IP status of the first Stellar Blade.

This new strategy is built on three pillars: Shift Up’s “high-quality self-publishing capabilities,” a “sales maximization strategy” designed to reach a broad global audience from day one, and the company’s “proven fanbase.” With the sequel, Shift Up anticipates exceeding the already impressive results of the first game.

Currently, only Stellar Blade is slated for this self-publishing model. Nikke and the upcoming Project Spirits will continue to be published under Level Infinite, a subsidiary of Tencent.

Unbound, Shinji Mikami’s Studio, Has Multiple Projects in Development

Regarding their collaboration with Unbound, Shift Up describes the partnership as an “acq-hire deal,” emphasizing a strong strategic alignment that made joining forces a natural progression. Shift Up and Unbound, which comprises approximately 60 individuals, are already collaborating across various aspects, including world-building and creative planning, yielding positive development outcomes.

The companies confirm that “multiple projects in development,” encompassing both large and medium-scale titles, are underway. While they anticipate a steady stream of releases, specific timelines or concrete announcements are yet to be revealed, indicating a period of patient waiting for further details.
