After an extended period sidelined by a knee injury, it appears we are getting closer to Shavkat Rakhmonov’s return.
For a considerable time, Rakhmonov was regarded as the welterweight division’s “boogeyman,” and deservedly so. His performances were consistently impressive. However, an injury to Belal Muhammad, who was slated to fight for the world title, prevented Rakhmonov from competing for the gold.
Subsequently, Rakhmonov himself began experiencing injury issues. After re-aggravating his knee, he was sidelined indefinitely. The timing of his return remained uncertain, but recent training footage suggests his active participation in the near future.
The key question now is: where does Shavkat Rakhmonov fit into the current welterweight landscape?
Shavkat Rakhmonov is back in training. He has been out of action since December 2024 due to a knee injury.
The Return of Shavkat Rakhmonov
A significant challenge for Rakhmonov will be the highly competitive nature of the welterweight division during his absence. While he may have once been the top contender, that is no longer the case.
Ian Machado Garry appears to be on the verge of challenging Islam Makhachev for the title. Beyond him, fighters like Carlos Prates, Michael Morales, and Sean Brady are coming off impressive victories. Logistically, it would make sense for Rakhmonov to be placed in a similar tier.
Conversely, some may argue that his previous win over Machado Garry still warrants a title shot. However, extended layoffs often necessitate a fighter proving they can overcome ring rust and once again compete effectively against the elite at 170 pounds.
Prepare yourselves, as this already stacked division is poised to become even more dynamic in the coming months.
