The final matchday of the Segunda season has determined the contenders for the last promotion spot through the play-offs, as well as the final team to face relegation. Matchday 42 also saw Racing Santander clinch the championship title after a decisive victory over Cadiz.
Racing Santander had already secured their promotion to La Liga with two games remaining. Deportivo La Coruna also confirmed their place in the top flight in the previous round. Going into the final weekend, only two points separated these two teams. However, Deportivo suffered a 2-1 defeat against Las Palmas, while Racing dominated Cadiz to claim the league title.
Play-off Spots Finalized Amidst Last-Day Drama
Las Palmas’ crucial victory secured them 5th position and a place in the play-offs. Had they not won, Burgos, who secured a 1-0 victory over Andorra, would have advanced. However, all four teams ranked above them also secured wins. Eibar, finishing in 8th, had a slight chance at the start of the day, but Castellon’s win was enough to clinch the final play-off spot, placing them 6th with 72 points, level with Burgos. Malaga finished 4th and Las Palmas 5th, both one point ahead.
Malaga concluded their league campaign with a 2-0 win against the already relegated Real Zaragoza. The results of the teams below them meant that Almeria needed a victory. Their top scorer and Segunda Pichichi, Sergio Arribas (with 25 goals), scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid, securing them 3rd place with 74 points.
The play-off pairings are now set: Castellon will face Almeria, with the first leg on June 6th at 21:00 CEST and the return leg on June 9th at the same time. Las Palmas will host the first leg of the other semi-final against Malaga on June 7th at 21:00 CEST, with the return match on June 10th. The first leg of the final is scheduled for June 14th, and the second leg for June 20th.
Mirandes Becomes Final Relegated Team
The final relegation spot was also decided on the last day. Mirandes required a victory against Leganes at Butarque to remain in Segunda. “Los Jabalies” were in a strong position until the 68th minute when Alex Millan’s goal for Leganes, the only goal of the match, effectively ended their hopes of survival.
