Real Madrid has been eliminated from this season’s Champions League after a hard-fought second-leg quarter-final match against Bayern Munich.
In a surprising turn of events, Real Madrid took an early lead within 36 seconds. A misplaced pass from Bayern’s Manuel Neuer was intercepted by Arda Guler, who capitalized by curling the ball into the empty net from long range. However, Bayern quickly responded. Joshua Kimmich’s corner found Aleksandar Pavlovic unmarked, and he headed home to equalize. Despite the setback, Real Madrid regained the lead just before the half-hour mark when Guler scored his second goal of the match with a well-placed free-kick, which eluded Neuer’s grasp.
The lead, however, was short-lived once again. Harry Kane leveled the score for Bayern, making it 2-2. But just before halftime, Vinicius Junior set up Kylian Mbappe, who netted his second goal of the tie, bringing the aggregate score to 4-4.
The second half saw both teams battling intensely, but the game shifted in the 86th minute when Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid received a second yellow card for a foul on Kane. Bayern swiftly converted their numerical advantage. Luis Diaz scored to give Bayern a 5-4 aggregate lead, which was extended to 6-4 in stoppage time by Michael Olise.
Real Madrid Facing a Trophyless Season
Despite a valiant effort in Munich, Real Madrid’s Champions League dreams have ended. With their exit from the Champions League and a significant deficit to overcome in La Liga, the team is likely to conclude the season without any major silverware.
