Barcelona, aiming to strengthen their defense this summer, had identified several targets. While Alessandro Bastoni was the preferred choice for head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, the club was also considering more affordable alternatives if Inter Milan’s demands proved too high.
One such alternative was Marcos Senesi, an Argentine center-back who is set to leave Bournemouth upon his contract’s expiry at the end of the season. Several clubs have expressed interest in Senesi, with reports suggesting his preference was a move to Spotify Camp Nou.
However, Barcelona’s focus on signing Bastoni has led to the Senesi option being deprioritized. Consequently, Senesi is no longer awaiting a move from Barcelona, according to Sky Germany via Sport.
Senesi Agrees Pre-Contract with Tottenham, Contingent on Premier League Status
Instead, Senesi is poised to remain in the Premier League, having reportedly agreed to a pre-contract with Tottenham Hotspur. This agreement is conditional: it will be nullified if Roberto De Zerbi’s team faces relegation this season. They are currently two points above the drop zone with four matches remaining.
Even if the Tottenham deal falls through due to relegation, Barcelona is unlikely to revive their interest. Sources suggest that a move to Italy would be Senesi’s next preferred option. This news is unfavorable for Atletico Madrid, who have also shown recent interest in the Bournemouth defender.
Should Barcelona fail to secure Bastoni this summer, Jon Martin of Real Sociedad is believed to be their secondary target, as Senesi appears to be off the table. Representatives for Martin have reportedly met with Deco recently, as Barcelona continues its transfer strategy development.
