Publisher Fellow Traveller has announced a collaboration with Origami Digital for the upcoming release of their new game, Penguin Colony. The developers behind Umurangi Generation revealed their new project last summer, but a concrete release window has only recently become clearer. While a 2026 launch still means over half a year away, Fellow Traveller aims for a release sometime within the year for both PC and Nintendo Switch 2. In addition to adding another platform for players, Fellow Traveller has also confirmed that a demo will be available during the June Steam Next Fest.

Many games have drawn inspiration from the cosmic horrors conceived by H.P. Lovecraft and his contemporaries. It’s easy to think of Lovecraft when encountering certain mysteries in games like Bloodborne, to feel unease in any shadowed corner where a sulfurous presence might lurk, and especially to feel dread about what lies beneath the planet’s most prevalent element: water. Whether it’s the deep sea or Cthulhu himself, games like Call of the Sea, Dredge, and Still Wakes the Deep resonate even more profoundly after reading Lovecraft.

In Penguin Colony, players will abandon the human perspective to control one of the local species: penguins. You will command several penguins, each possessing unique abilities to overcome obstacles encountered in the game’s frigid setting. For anyone who has read At the Mountains of Madness, the mere mention of this bird is enough to pique interest in what the Australian studio has in store. However, you don’t need to be familiar with the fate of that intrepid expedition to understand its grim outcome, as you’ll learn it while being part of the local fauna that witnesses the arrival of scientists who had no idea what they were getting into.

The trailer provides a good sense of Penguin Colony‘s tone, but be warned, those seeking to avoid all spoilers might want to look away, as it reveals some unsettling sights that our minds may not be prepared to comprehend or even define. Nevertheless, the choice of voice actor for the trailer’s narration is superb, offering a direct trip to Revachol—something H.P. Lovecraft might not have appreciated.

Fellow Traveller’s catalog is filled with games that leave a lasting impression on players. Last week, Titanium Court was released, and based on player reactions, its accolades at this year’s IGF awards seem well-deserved. Under their publishing label, beloved narrative-driven titles like 1000 x RESIST and the entire body of work from Jump Over the Age, such as In Other Waters and both Citizen Sleeper games, have been released. Notably, the second Citizen Sleeper is a nominee for this year’s Hugo Awards.

The list continues with modern classics like Neo Cab, Paradise Killer, Genesis Noir, and The Stillness of the Wind, as well as more recent releases like Pine, Afterlove EP, Wanderstars, and Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo. In essence, Fellow Traveller is a mark of quality for those who enjoy powerful stories and well-crafted narratives. It seems that Penguin Colony fits perfectly with this publisher’s ethos, and in less than two months, we’ll be able to verify this when its demo becomes available.
