A major PFL fight scheduled for this year has been canceled following Paul Hughes’ disclosure of a severe injury, which has led to his withdrawal from the PFL Belfast event.
Lightweight sensation Paul Hughes had been eagerly anticipating his return to the Smartcage on April 16th, where he was set to headline PFL Belfast against formidable striker Jay-Jay Wilson. His position in the PFL lightweight title landscape remains uncertain after his unanimous decision loss to Usman Nurmagomedov in their October rematch.
Despite a recent setback, Hughes continues to be a prominent figure in the PFL, boasting impressive victories against AJ McKee, Bruno Miranda, and Bobby King. The highly regarded Irish athlete chose to re-sign with the PFL, reportedly turning down interest from the UFC.
The bout against Wilson represented a significant opportunity for Hughes to solidify his standing in the division, even with two prior losses to Nurmagomedov. However, a severe injury sustained shortly before PFL Belfast means Hughes’ return to competition will likely be delayed for an extended period.
Paul Hughes Faces Potential Season-Ending Sideline Following Major Knee Surgery
Hughes confirmed the unfortunate cancellation of his PFL comeback fight, citing a serious knee injury, in a recent video shared on Instagram.
“I am officially out of PFL Belfast,” Hughes stated. “I exhausted all possible options. Surgery is scheduled for next week to address the problem. I apologize to all my fans; I am utterly devastated. The event will proceed, showcasing the finest talent Ireland has to offer, including my teammates and the next generation of Irish MMA. I will return as quickly as humanly possible. The obstacle is the way.”
Currently, it remains unclear whether Wilson will receive a substitute opponent or if the PFL will restructure the main event for PFL Belfast. Regarding Hughes’ recovery timeline, he could potentially be out of action for the remainder of the year, contingent on the extent of his unspecified injury.
