Mitch McKee Explains PFL Decision Over UFC and Sergio Pettis Title Eliminator

Mitch McKee is set for a high-stakes PFL debut against Sergio Pettis in the PFL Chicago main event this Saturday. McKee, who faces the former Bellator MMA champion with significant fighting experience, discussed the path that led him to this pivotal matchup.

Reflecting on his PFL signing and the opportunity to immediately contend for a bantamweight title shot with a victory over Pettis, McKee shared his perspective:

“Yes, I signed with PFL last Fall. Initially, they proposed a different opponent, which I accepted. However, a week or two later, they asked if I would be interested in fighting Sergio Pettis instead. His original opponent was someone else, whose name I don't recall. I agreed almost immediately, so I've been aware of this fight for about five months now, and it's been a positive experience.”

While his primary focus is on the fight itself, McKee acknowledged the potential for significant career advancement this bout offers:

“That's precisely why I accepted the offer – the opportunity. I wouldn't pass up a chance like this. My coaches and I all believe I'm ready for this level of competition. So, if I secure a win this coming weekend, we'll be discussing title contention. I'm incredibly excited. I'm approaching this as my PFL debut, a scenario with high risks and high rewards. I always bet on myself.”

Despite the significance of his PFL bout, McKee revealed that he was also in discussions with the UFC, explaining his decision:

“After my knockout in September last year, negotiations with both PFL and the UFC began promptly. The UFC suggested I wait and participate in Dana White's Contender Series. Meanwhile, PFL was eager to offer me opportunities and invest in my development, which is exactly what they've done. It felt like they genuinely wanted me, rather than just adding me to the roster as might happen in the UFC.”

“They were committed to investing in me, and immediately after signing, they presented me with this significant opportunity. They are clearly focused on providing me with the maximum number of opportunities. I believe this is a perfect matchup.”

McKee's PFL debut was initially slated for an earlier date and potentially a different location, but the current arrangement proved more advantageous for the undefeated fighter:

“Initially, when we were discussing it in the Fall, it was potentially a co-main event in Pittsburgh. Then, they switched it to the main event in Chicago, which I prefer even more, as many of my family and friends are from Minnesota, making it easier for them to attend and support me. I've already spoken with my wife's family, and they're renting a 12-passenger van to bring a large group.”
