Costello van Steenis Defends Middleweight Title with Brutal Elbow KO at PFL Madrid
Costello van Steenis successfully defended his middleweight championship title at PFL Madrid, securing a stunning elbow knockout victory over Fabian Edwards.
The opening round was quite intense, but van Steenis gained an advantage towards the end, thwarting Edwards' takedown attempt and nearly finishing with a guillotine choke. Edwards managed to defend, but was forced to concede top control to the reigning champion, likely giving van Steenis the first round.
Edwards again focused on grappling in the second round and managed to take van Steenis to the mat, but his success was short-lived. With just over two minutes remaining in the round, van Steenis reversed position, took Edwards' back, and attempted a rear-naked choke.
Edwards survived the round, even managing to get back to his feet and land a few late strikes, but most of the significant action came from van Steenis, giving him a clear lead after two rounds.
Despite his lack of success in wrestling, Edwards attempted another takedown in the third round and narrowly avoided another tight guillotine. Edwards defended and made yet another attempt to bring the fight to the ground, leaving his head exposed to a series of short elbow strikes. Seizing this opportunity, van Steenis unleashed a barrage of elbows against the fence, knocking Edwards out cold.
Official Result: Costello van Steenis defeated Fabian Edwards via KO (elbows) at 1:48 of Round 3.
