The AZ Alkmaar midfielder has been recognized as one of Europe’s emerging talents, and it is widely anticipated that he will make a significant move during the summer transfer period.
Barcelona may hold a slight advantage as Smit is reportedly a supporter of the club. Furthermore, Ronald Koeman, the manager of the Dutch national team, believes that a move to Catalonia would be beneficial for the 20-year-old’s development. According to Diario AS, Koeman stated:
“He’s a player for Barça. He could be a mix of Frenkie de Jong and Pedri. If you’re a mix of the two, you’re very good. He’s going to go to a big team from outside the Netherlands, because in Holland nobody can pay the money that is needed to keep him for another year. He’s one of the best young players we have had, but he has to learn more and play more games.”
Real Madrid Also Interested in Smit
Currently, Smit is not at the very top of Barcelona’s transfer priority list, but this could shift as the summer approaches. Should he move to Spain, Real Madrid appears to be a more probable destination, as they consider him a leading candidate to bolster their midfield at the Bernabeu.
