A year after Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid on a cut-price deal just before his contract expired, the two clubs have re-established contact. However, this renewed communication is not about player transfers as many might have expected.
Liverpool have expressed interest in several Real Madrid players ahead of the summer transfer window, including midfielder Eduardo Camavinga. Yet, the recent contact between the clubs is not related to any player but rather concerns Xabi Alonso.
According to Diario AS, Liverpool are exploring the possibility of appointing Alonso to succeed under-pressure manager Arne Slot. As part of their due diligence, Liverpool have spoken with Real Madrid to understand the circumstances surrounding Alonso’s departure from the Bernabeu in January.
Despite the previous situation involving Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2025, Real Madrid and Liverpool maintain strong institutional relationships. Liverpool has leveraged this connection to assess whether Alonso would be the right choice for their next manager. While Alonso is considered their top candidate to replace Slot, the club wants to ensure he is the most suitable option available before making a final decision.
Alonso Could Take Over at Liverpool This Summer
Liverpool has experienced a disappointing season, with no trophies in sight despite a significant investment of over €400 million last summer. While they are on track to qualify for the Champions League, this achievement is unlikely to save Arne Slot, who is expected to be dismissed at the end of the campaign.
Should Slot depart, Alonso appears to be in a strong position to take charge at Anfield. If he accepts the role, he will be eager to prove that his brief tenure as Real Madrid manager was merely an anomaly.
