According to top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan, Khamzat Chimaev is not planning to move up to the light heavyweight division (205 pounds) in the near future. Despite initial thoughts of a weight class change after his recent title loss at UFC 328, Chimaev has reportedly reconsidered.
Tsarukyan, who is a close friend and training partner of Chimaev, stated on the JAXXON Podcast that “Borz” is now determined to secure a rematch against Sean Strickland to regain his lost glory. Tsarukyan emphasized that Chimaev is more motivated than ever and has decided to put aside aspirations of becoming a two-division champion for the immediate goal of facing Strickland again.
“Khamzat wants to do the rematch. His head is ready to go, and heโs more motivated than before,” Tsarukyan confirmed.
Sean Strickland’s Stance on a Rematch
While Khamzat Chimaev is eager for an immediate rematch, Sean Strickland, the current two-time UFC middleweight champion, has a different perspective. Strickland, after reclaiming the middleweight title, suggested to Full Send MMA that Chimaev should earn a couple of wins before being considered for another title shot. Strickland believes that adhering to the UFC’s ranking system is crucial for the integrity of the sport.
“As of always you go get a couple Wโs and Iโll see you again, thatโs how it works. I truly believe ranking systems matter in the UFC and whenever they donโt, it belittles the sport. So go get a couple Wโs and Iโll see you again,” Strickland stated.
