In December, Villarreal proposed a one-year extension, with an option for an additional year contingent on performance targets. Marcelino found the offer unsatisfactory, leading to the mutual decision to postpone further talks.
Villarreal's Champions League campaign was a letdown. While both parties express interest in continuing their partnership, neither seems inclined to insist on the current arrangement if the other wishes to move on. Marcelino, for his part, is also not actively seeking a new position at this time.
