Simeone on Martin's Red Card: 'They Got It Wrong' After Atletico's Barcelona Defeat

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone voiced his strong disagreement with the referee's decision to overturn Gerard Martin's red card during their recent 2-1 loss against Barcelona. Despite a valiant effort with ten men, Los Rojiblancos ultimately succumbed to a late Robert Lewandowski goal.

The most contentious moment of the match centered around the VAR review that led to Gerard Martin's red card being rescinded. Simeone remained convinced that the Blaugrana defender should have been sent off.

Simeone explained his stance: "They informed me, and I saw the Betis-Rayo game, where the CTA [Referees' Technical Committee] confirmed it was a sending off. There isn't much more to add; he was late with the tackle, stepping fully on his opponent's ankle. We'll see if the CTA revisits this. The situation is clear."

He continued, "They haven't actively worked against us, but they simply got it wrong. Just as coaches make mistakes, so do players. Did you witness the Betis-Rayo incident or not? Well, it's undeniable."

When asked about his half-time conversation with the referee, Simeone clarified it revolved around the decision to upgrade Nicolas Gonzalez’s second yellow card to a red. "I repeated what I said earlier: I told the referee it was yellow, yellow, then red. He, however, insisted it was red, red."

Performance Praised Despite Defeat

Despite the loss, Atletico showcased an impressive performance, particularly in the first half, putting Barcelona under significant pressure. In the second half, they nearly managed to secure a draw while a man down.

Reflecting on the match, Simeone stated, "We can analyze it in two halves. Our first half was exceptionally strong. We generated numerous chances and displayed excellent movement. Then, we faced a red card that was unequivocally a red card – some reds are just reds, and that was one. In the second half, we were forced to defend and couldn't attack as we wished. They eventually scored from a rebound."

Goalkeeper Juan Musso echoed Simeone's sentiments, asserting, "Gerard Martin should have received the red card. We were the superior side with eleven players each. We must move forward, and this match has certainly boosted our confidence. I have faith in this team."

When questioned about any positives from the performance despite the defeat, Simeone offered tempered praise for his team. "Losing is never positive. However, it's true that the lads' effort was superb. The first half was genuinely excellent, and the dedication shown in the second half was immense. Our two debutants entered the game well, considering the difficult circumstances. While focusing on these positives is beneficial, ultimately, losing is not a good outcome."

Focus Shifts to Champions League Quarter-Final and Youth Debuts

Simeone was also asked about the potential impact of Raphinha’s absence for the upcoming Champions League quarter-final, a player he had previously commended. "I'm not focused on Raphinha; my thoughts are entirely on the quarter-final match at their stadium, and the immense responsibility that game entails. We absolutely must play better than we did during our Copa del Rey semi-final visit there, where we failed to attack, create chances, or achieve anything significant."

With several Atletico players being rested, Simeone introduced academy talents Taufik Seidu and Javi Morcillo for their senior debuts in the second half.

"It was an opportune moment for their debuts; they brought much-needed energy. Furthermore, players like Lookman and others benefited from the rest, which was advantageous," Simeone added.

Los Colchoneros are set to travel to Camp Nou this Wednesday night to face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The return leg will take place the following Tuesday at the Metropolitano.
