Andoni Iraola to Depart Bournemouth, Athletic Club Among Potential Destinations

Former Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola is expected to leave Bournemouth at the conclusion of the season after three years with the club. The Basque manager is reportedly a target for the managerial vacancy at his former club, Athletic Club, following Ernesto Valverde's announcement of his departure at the end of the current campaign.

Iraola has previously identified Valverde as a significant influence, and there was initial strong speculation linking him with a return to San Mamés. However, in recent weeks, these discussions have somewhat subsided, with reports suggesting that President Jon Uriarte is leaning towards appointing former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, who is currently considered the frontrunner for the role.

Iraola's Departure from Bournemouth Confirmed

According to reports from The Athletic, Iraola has made the decision to leave Bournemouth upon the expiry of his contract. Bournemouth has since confirmed this development. Iraola typically signs one-year rolling contracts and has opted to seek a new challenge, despite the club's efforts to retain him. Following Iraola's successful guidance, which saw the Cherries achieve a 12th and a 9th-place finish in the league, the club is now reportedly considering Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as a potential replacement. Bournemouth currently sits 11th in the standings, three points adrift of a European qualification spot and a comfortable 15 points clear of the relegation zone.

Iraola Poised for New Opportunities

In the past, Iraola has been linked with managerial positions at Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, and even with a potential move to Real Madrid this summer, though that interest has reportedly cooled. This week, Iraola confirmed that he has been in communication with Athletic Club since Valverde's announcement.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Newcastle United has also made an approach for Iraola, potentially to replace Eddie Howe. It appears the 43-year-old manager will have a range of attractive options to choose from, following successful stints at Mirandés, Rayo Vallecano, and Bournemouth.
