Simeone Discusses Atletico Madrid's Derby Defeat to Real Madrid, Avoids Blaming Referee

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone chose not to attribute his team's derby loss against Real Madrid to the referee's decisions, even though officiating was a significant talking point. Controversy flared over Atletico's unawarded penalty claim and Real Madrid's disagreement regarding Fede Valverde's red card.

Los Colchoneros appealed for a spot-kick after Dani Carvajal challenged Marcos Llorente following his shot in the first half. Conversely, Alvaro Arbeloa publicly expressed his disagreement with the referee's assessment of Valverde's sending off. However, Simeone stated he was too far from the incidents to make an impartial judgment.

“I don’t believe that was the reason for our defeat. We created several good chances but failed to capitalize on them. I think we deserved a bit more from the game,” Simeone explained to Marca.

He further elaborated, “I don’t think the refereeing interfered with the overall flow of the match. We had the capacity to do much more, especially in defending their goals and being more effective in attack. When facing quality opponents, any error is bound to be punished.”

Simeone Emphasizes Need for Greater Control

Simeone underscored his team's necessity for increased control throughout the match. "We needed to control the game more, attack differently," he stated, expressing regret that his team couldn't effectively implement this strategy at crucial moments, particularly after Real Madrid took the lead. He noted he had "already explained for the fourth time" his assessment of the match.

Simeone Commends Ademola Lookman's Performance

Despite the defeat, Simeone offered praise for Ademola Lookman's individual contribution. Lookman opened the scoring for Atletico, demonstrating effective link-up play with Giuliano Simeone to penetrate the Real Madrid defense.

“He’s been developing, working diligently, bringing diverse contributions to the team,” Simeone commented. “We’re also assisting him in improving defensively, which he’s already keen on. He’s a player with great passion and a strong willingness to learn. I hope he continues to deliver significant contributions, just as he did today.”

Since his €35 million transfer from Atalanta in January, Lookman has accumulated 14 appearances, netting five goals and providing four assists. While Simeone recently suggested Lookman needed defensive improvements, his impressive offensive contributions have already garnered him the affection of Atletico supporters.
