Real Madrid's Interest in Liverpool's Konaté: Nothing Concrete

July 11, 2026Carlos Mendoza2 мин

Despite earlier indications that he might consider leaving, Liverpool's French international defender, Ibrahima Konaté, is now reportedly open to extending his contract at Anfield this summer. Throughout the season, Konaté has been persistently linked with a move to Real Madrid, though the Spanish giants have yet to make any concrete advancements.

Liverpool previously tried to initiate contract renewal discussions with Konaté in early 2025, but faced reluctance from the player. Concurrently, rumors surfaced about Real Madrid's interest in acquiring the defender on a free transfer this summer. Nevertheless, by November, Real Madrid had reportedly communicated to Liverpool that they were not actively pursuing Konaté.

Konaté Now Open to Liverpool Contract Renewal

Providing the latest update on Konaté's future, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed to Caught Offside that the player is now receptive to extending his stay at Anfield. Romano added that Liverpool plans to resume discussions with Konaté's agent in April.

Real Madrid Interest Remains 'Nothing Concrete'

Notwithstanding the November communication, speculation linking Konaté to Real Madrid resurfaced after Dayot Upamecano signed a new deal with Bayern Munich in February. The 26-year-old has frequently been mentioned as a possible central defensive target for Real Madrid this summer, alongside names like Nico Schlotterbeck and Jacobo Ramon. Romano clarified that while Konaté isn't entirely off Real Madrid's radar as they continue their search for a defender, there is currently 'nothing concrete' regarding their pursuit of him.

Uncertainty Surrounds Real Madrid's Defensive Plans

Upamecano was reportedly Real Madrid's top defensive target. For the upcoming season, the club currently has Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio, and Éder Militão under contract. Antonio Rüdiger is anticipated to receive a one-year contract extension, but David Alaba is expected to depart at the season's conclusion. Real Madrid typically defers crucial squad planning decisions until May, yet there isn't a clear candidate for the fifth center-back position next season.
