Lamine Yamal Skips Spain Lap of Honour Amidst Islamophobic Chants

The Spanish national team's send-off event for the 2026 World Cup arguably became the most regrettable night in its recent history, spanning the past two decades. What was intended as a festive celebration before La Roja, a strong contender, headed to the United States, was unfortunately overshadowed by anti-Islamic chants heard at the RCDE Stadium.

These discriminatory chants occurred on two separate occasions during the first half and once more in the second, with numerous spectators participating in the offensive chorus of "Who doesn't jump is a Muslim." Following the match, Spain's manager, Luis de la Fuente, strongly criticized these incidents. Rafael Louzan, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), also condemned the behavior, though he labeled it an isolated event.

Impact on Lamine Yamal

It was widely observed that Lamine Yamal, one of Spain’s star players, is of Muslim faith. During the second half, camera footage showed the teenage sensation appearing desolate on the bench, and earlier in the first half, he looked visibly downcast on the pitch as the half concluded. As the rest of the Spanish squad performed their final lap of honour to bid farewell to fans before their World Cup journey, Lamine Yamal departed the field alone, heading directly to the dressing room.

Yamal Affected by Discriminatory Chants

As reported by Cadena SER, Lamine Yamal exited the stadium through a discreet pathway, accompanied by a security team member. The 18-year-old appeared profoundly distressed by the events that transpired during the game. While Yamal has previously encountered racist abuse, such as at the Santiago Bernabeu, this instance marks the first time such hostility originated from his own national team's supporters.

Post-match, teammate Pedri also denounced the chants, stressing the collective responsibility to eliminate such behavior. He stated, "We do not condone any racist chants; we find them unacceptable and do not support them in any manner. We all need to collaborate to eradicate them from football stadiums."
