Lamine Yamal on Barcelona-Atletico Madrid: 'We can’t think of it as a miracle'
Ahead of the crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal has urged his teammates to approach the potential comeback not as a miracle, but as a testament to their capabilities. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Barcelona faces a stern test as they aim to hand Atletico their fourth home defeat of the season.
When questioned about whether avenging their Copa del Rey elimination by Atletico would be a motivating factor, Yamal acknowledged the past defeat but stressed Barcelona's broader ambition in the Champions League.
"It's true that we were eliminated from the Cup, but that's not the only reason. Barça has been striving for the Champions League for many years; we are incredibly eager to advance to the next round, and we are Barça – we will give our absolute all," he stated.
"I believe the Champions League, alongside the World Cup, is the most significant competition, and that speaks volumes. I've always dreamed of winning it with Barcelona."
Lamine Yamal: 'We can’t think of it as a miracle'
Referencing Barcelona's historic 6-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, a celebrated comeback in the club's history, Yamal emphasized that such a feat should not be viewed as extraordinary but as a result of their own gameplay.
"We need intensity, without losing sight of our own game. We must not view a comeback as a miracle. We will play as we know how. It's a game where we start 2-0 down," he explained.
Yamal also conveyed a promise to the Barcelona supporters.
"We promise that if we are eliminated, it will be after fighting until the very end. We will not let a single minute go by without pressing and running; we will give it our all. It's a 90-minute game or more, and it's not over yet. A comeback is very possible, and that's why we are here."
The La Masia Influence is Key for Barcelona
Despite the pressure, the young forward expressed confidence in the team's ability to turn the tie around, highlighting the collective talent beyond himself.
"Fortunately, I play for Barça, and there are many high-quality players, world-class veterans who prove their worth every year. I don't think it's solely up to me to succeed. If it were, I wouldn't mind either. We have many players who can individually change a game, and that's why I have faith in the team."
He also underscored the importance of the La Masia academy in fostering unity within the Barcelona squad.
"It's very important for matches like tomorrow's. We all come from here, we love Barça, and we will give everything until the end, no matter what. If there's a chance, we will play and fight until the finish."
Historically, only one team has managed to come back from a two-goal deficit in a Champions League knockout tie away from home – Marcus Rashford's Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona aims to expand on this statistic, while Atletico Madrid has never lost a Champions League knockout tie on home soil.
