Joan Laporta hints at reduced Barcelona transfer activity
The upcoming summer transfer window is set to be a crucial period for Barcelona, as the club will need to reinforce several key positions ahead of the 2024-25 season. A central defender and a striker are high on the wishlist, while a new left winger might also be required, especially if Marcus Rashford's permanent signing doesn't materialize, which appears increasingly probable.
Despite the apparent need to address multiple areas within Hansi Flick's squad, club president Joan Laporta has indicated in an interview with Món Esport (as reported by MD) that Barcelona is not planning significant transfer market activity this summer.
“There's no need to enter the transfer market just for the sake of it, and we must continue to focus on utilizing our existing internal resources to strengthen the squad where truly needed. While I believe we will improve in all areas, my conviction is that after assembling such a competitive team, the priority should be its maintenance and consolidation.”
Laporta Champions La Masia Talents for Promotion
Instead of relying heavily on external acquisitions, Laporta has emphasized his desire for Barcelona to keep prioritizing internal promotions. He firmly believes that several La Masia prospects are primed to compete for spots in Flick's team.
“My faith in La Masia is unwavering. I championed it extensively during my previous tenure, and my conviction remains absolute. Historically, the most successful Barça teams – indeed, the greatest Barça team ever – have been characterized by a strong core of homegrown players complemented by exceptional talent brought in from elsewhere.”
“We will only pursue new signings if the technical management identifies one or two players capable of genuinely strengthening our already formidable squad.”
The extent of Barcelona's transfer activity this summer remains to be seen. While a renewed focus on La Masia is logical, to truly challenge as Europe's elite, the squad will likely also require the addition of proven, top-tier talent.
