FSG Ends Pursuit of La Liga Club Acquisition

July 11, 2026Pablo Navarro2 мин

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the ownership entity behind Liverpool FC, has reportedly halted its efforts to acquire a club in Spain's La Liga. Earlier reports indicated a strong interest in securing a majority stake in Getafe, but these plans are now understood to be off the table.

FSG had been exploring the multi-club ownership model, similar to the successful strategy employed by City Football Group at Manchester City. Their search for a suitable Spanish club involved evaluating several options. Initially, Malaga and Girondins de Bordeaux were considered, before Getafe emerged as the primary target. Getafe's president and majority owner, Angel Torres, had previously expressed a willingness to sell, with reports suggesting that due diligence was underway for a potential €150 million transaction.

Liverpool Owners Withdraw Interest in Getafe

However, sources such as The Athletic indicate that FSG has since withdrawn its interest in Getafe. The group also reportedly looked into purchasing a 30% share in AS Monaco, among a total of 25 clubs considered for potential investment. This multi-club project is now described as 'dormant,' largely due to ongoing uncertainties from UEFA regarding the eligibility of multiple clubs under the same ownership to compete in European competitions.

Prior to focusing on Getafe, FSG also evaluated Espanyol, Levante, and Real Valladolid. Getafe, however, had reached the most advanced stage in discussions. Key factors contributing to FSG's decision to abandon the deal included the stringent salary limit regulations in La Liga, the overall acquisition cost, and concerns about limited revenue streams. These elements led FSG to question whether they could implement their desired level of investment effectively.

Getafe Owner Angel Torres Not Selling Imminently

In related developments, Getafe owner Angel Torres has since clarified that he is not looking to sell the club immediately. He has publicly stated his intention to depart only after the ongoing renovation work at the Coliseum stadium is completed, which is projected for 2028.
