FC Barcelona Explores Montjuïc Return for 2027 Stadium Works

FC Barcelona triumphantly returned to their revitalized Spotify Camp Nou last November, marking a splendid period of performance. The squad has maintained a perfect home record since their comeback, a streak they are eager to extend.

The club recently secured approval to expand the stadium's capacity to 62,000, with eventual plans for it to accommodate nearly 100,000 spectators once renovations are fully complete. Despite this progress, Barcelona anticipates needing to temporarily relocate again, likely in 2027.

By April 2027, the aim is to finish constructing all three stadium tiers. Following this milestone, the team must play all matches away from home to allow for the installation of the new roof. This four-month construction phase implies that Barcelona will commence the 2027-28 season playing away from the Spotify Camp Nou for several weeks.

President Joan Laporta, recently re-elected, initially proposed using the Estadi Johan Cruyff for these temporary fixtures, with intentions to upgrade it to meet La Liga standards. However, this venue would only support a maximum attendance of 18,000, leading to a substantial decrease in crucial matchday income.

Alternatively, Barcelona could opt to return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, their temporary home from the beginning of the 2023-24 season until their return to Spotify Camp Nou last November. The Montjuïc stadium offers a significantly higher capacity, making it a strong contender for hosting these matches, a possibility reportedly under consideration by club management.

Barcelona to Consult City Council on Montjuïc Return

While a final decision is pending, club officials are expected to engage with the Barcelona City Council to discuss a potential return to the Estadi Olímpic. Although the location might present logistical challenges for some fans, this option promises greater financial benefits for the club compared to playing at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
