Eric Garcia Identifies Raphinha as Barcelona's Unsung Leader: 'Fiery Spirit' Despite Frustrations
Eric Garcia has singled out Raphinha as a key leader within the Barcelona squad, even noting that the Brazilian can sometimes be a frustrating teammate. Raphinha's performance levels significantly rose during the final stages of Xavi Hernandez’s management, and he has since elevated his game further under Hansi Flick over the past eighteen months.
Raphinha was included in Barcelona's captaincy group at the beginning of Flick's initial season in charge, quickly becoming a symbol of the team's defiant spirit. Last season, he was arguably their most influential player, impressively contributing 34 goals and 26 assists across just 57 appearances.
'His Exaggerations Can Be Annoying, But He's Vital'
During an interview with DAZN, Garcia was asked if there was a less obvious, silent leader within the Barcelona team.
“He’s not a leader who’s that quiet and under the radar, but I think Raphinha is. He has a lot of character, and you often get mad at him because he sometimes exaggerates, but I think he has this fiery spirit that makes him run up and down the pitch the whole game, helping us a lot in defense and scoring the goals he scores,” Garcia stated.
Raphinha was a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or, and much to his disappointment, was left out of the FIFPro World XI. Barcelona will now be without his services for five weeks at a critical juncture of the season.
Garcia added, “Considering the year he had last season, he can be considered one of the best players in the world.”
Eric Garcia's Emerging Leadership Role
Garcia himself has embraced a leadership role this season, joining the captaincy group following Marc-Andre ter Stegen's loan move to Girona.
“Trying to help my teammates as much as possible comes naturally to me. I like helping them both on and off the field. I’ve been captain since I was little,” Garcia remarked.
Flick has consistently praised Garcia’s leadership qualities, and he has undoubtedly been one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers this season. After Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, and Joan Garcia, Eric is Flick’s fourth most-utilized player this term and recently signed a new deal extending until 2031. He is expected to return from injury after the international break.
