Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has confirmed that a quintet of injured players will miss the upcoming La Liga clash against Barcelona on Saturday night. However, there's a glimmer of hope for some of them to return for the Champions League first leg at Camp Nou next week.

Ahead of the highly anticipated match, Simeone downplayed the significance of the tactical duel between himself and Barcelona's coach, Hansi Flick. "Football is about the players, not the coaches," Simeone stated. "Barcelona has adopted a specific style since their coach arrived, characterized by a high defensive line and attacking positions designed to exploit winning duels. We, with our established playing style over the past 14 years, will continue to strive for competitiveness against them."

Five Key Players Sidelined

Simeone explicitly confirmed that Rodrigo Mendoza, Pablo Barrios, Jan Oblak, Marc Pubill, and Johnny Cardoso are all unfit to face the Catalan giants. Providing updates on their recovery, he added, "All the injured players are progressing very well. Jan will train with the group on Monday. Mendoza will also train with the group on Monday. Pablo is doing very well. And Pubill is training hard so he can help us in the best way when needed."

Midfield Concerns for Simeone

The absence of Mendoza creates a particularly acute problem in midfield. With Johnny Cardoso and Marcos Llorente also unavailable due to injury and suspension respectively, and Pablo Barrios sidelined, Los Rojiblancos face a significant shortage in the central areas. Koke Resurreccion and Obed Vargas are the sole natural midfield options remaining. Simeone might consider improvising with players like Alex Baena or Thiago Almada in those roles. While Llorente will be back from suspension for the European fixture, Cardoso's injury is expected to persist.

On a positive note, Oblak, Mendoza, and possibly Pubill appear set to return in time for the second leg next week. Furthermore, Alexander Sorloth, who sustained a head wound on international duty, seems fit and available for this weekend's encounter.
