Atletico Madrid is set to undertake a significant squad overhaul this summer, aiming to reinforce all areas of the pitch. Among their key priorities is Chelsea's Marc Cucurella. The Spanish club is also reportedly in discussions to find a replacement for Antoine Griezmann and to acquire a new midfielder to bolster their ranks.

In pursuit of these objectives, Sporting Director Mateu Alemany recently traveled to Italy to negotiate for Atalanta midfielder Ederson dos Santos. Earlier in January, Alemany was also spotted in Paris, reportedly attempting to convince Kang-In Lee to join Atletico Madrid. Lee is viewed as a potential successor to Antoine Griezmann, who has confirmed his departure to Orlando City in the summer.

Marc Cucurella Emerges as Top Left-Back Target for Atletico Madrid

According to reports from Diario AS, Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella is Atletico Madrid's ideal candidate for the left-back position, topping their current shortlist. Despite having only two years remaining on his contract, securing Cucurella is considered a challenging prospect for Atletico, as Chelsea has not indicated any willingness to sell him. Atletico had previously shown interest in the 27-year-old before his move to England, impressed by his strong performances at Eibar and Getafe.

Cucurella Open to La Liga Return

This interest comes just hours after Cucurella himself expressed a desire to return to Spanish football at some point in his career. While he admitted that he would find it difficult to turn down a return to Barcelona, where he came through the academy, his general openness to playing in La Liga will undoubtedly encourage Atletico.

Atletico Madrid Explores Alternative Left-Back Options

Atletico is also reportedly considering several alternative options for the left-back role. These include Espanyol loanee Carlos Romero, who possesses a €45 million release clause; Sporting CP's Maxi Araujo; Club Brugge's Joaquin Seys; and Eintracht Frankfurt's Nathaniel Brown. Although Matteo Ruggeri is currently Diego Simeone's first-choice left-back, the team's limited depth in the position has frequently necessitated using David Hancko there this season.
