Atletico Madrid Criticize Fede Valverde Ban, Allege Double Standards
Real Madrid recently learned the duration of Fede Valverde's suspension following his red card in Sunday's Madrid derby triumph against Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan midfielder received the sending-off for a tackle on Alex Baena. Although the Bernabéu club appealed the decision, it was upheld by the Spanish Football Federation's Competition Committee.
Conveniently for Real Madrid, Valverde received the minimal penalty for the infraction: a single-match ban. This means he will miss the upcoming match against Mallorca after the international break, but will be available for the subsequent home fixture versus Girona.
The Competition Committee's ruling has ignited controversy, with Atlético Madrid publicly criticizing the perceived double standards. Atleti used social media to draw attention to a past committee decision that resulted in a dissimilar outcome for a comparable incident.
Atlético initiated their social media thread with a sarcastic remark directed at the Competition Committee: "Congratulations, you excel at this. Objective achieved: 1 game for Valverde." They then contrasted the official report of Valverde's dismissal with that of Athletic Club's Oihan Sancet, who was red-carded in November against Barcelona for what Atleti deemed a similar challenge.
Their statement concluded with a pointed observation: "Football fans can rest easy, knowing that team colors and media pressure have no bearing on sports justice decisions. Same committee. Same report wording. Different criteria."
Atleti Expresses Broader Discontent with Madrid Derby Decisions
Prior to this, Atleti had already voiced strong displeasure in another social media post. They expressed frustration over several unfavorable decisions during Sunday's Bernabéu encounter, including the rejection of a penalty appeal following a collision between Marcos Llorente and Dani Carvajal early in the Madrid derby.
While it's uncertain if Atleti will continue their public criticisms, their current discontent with recent events is unmistakable.
