Athletic Club Managerial Search: Iraola's Hesitation & Terzic's Rise

July 11, 2026Carlos Mendoza2 мин

Andoni Iraola quickly emerged as a leading contender for the Athletic Club managerial position after Ernesto Valverde declared his intention to depart San Mames at the season's conclusion. The current Bournemouth manager has cultivated an impressive reputation in European football, built on successful tenures at Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano.

Valverde's exit marks the end of a four-year period that has cemented his legacy as one of Athletic's most esteemed managers across his three spells. His successor faces a considerable challenge, and Iraola is widely regarded as one of the most promising options to take on the role. Following a somewhat subdued fourth campaign, there's a strong feeling in Bilbao that the club requires a fresh impetus.

Iraola's Decision Pending for Athletic Club

Days after Valverde's announcement, Iraola acknowledged 'El Txingurri' as a significant influence on his coaching philosophy, though he denied any current contact with his former club. RadioMarca reports that Iraola has yet to give his approval to Athletic and is currently evaluating other offers.

This cautious approach is characteristic of Iraola, who has consistently opted for one-year contracts during his time at both Rayo and Bournemouth, often deferring his renewal decisions until the conclusion of the season.

Edin Terzic Emerges as Strong Contender

Alongside Iraola, former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic appears to be a prominent candidate to succeed Valverde. The same outlet indicates that Athletic expects to finalize a decision in the coming weeks, with personal terms reportedly already agreed with Terzic. His keen interest in the role, combined with the fact that Jon Uriarte – a key proponent of his appointment – is set to run unopposed for the presidency this summer, significantly strengthens his prospects.

Rayo Vallecano's current manager, Inigo Perez, whose contract also expires this summer, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. Iraola's former assistant has seen his standing rise over the past two seasons, guiding Rayo to the quarter-finals of the Conference League while maintaining a four-point cushion from the relegation zone.
