Arsenal Show Interest in Highly-Rated La Liga Defender
Arsenal has a history of scouting talent in the Spanish La Liga, and this trend might continue in 2026. Following their acquisitions of Martin Zubimendi and Cristhian Mosquera from Real Sociedad and Valencia last summer, the Gunners are now reportedly targeting Celta Vigo's Oscar Mingueza.
According to the BBC (via ED), Arsenal has become the latest club to express interest in the 26-year-old defender. Mingueza is valued in London for his adaptability, particularly his ability to play effectively at either full-back position.
Mingueza, who recently parted ways with his long-time agent, is widely expected to leave Celta at the conclusion of the season. His contract is set to expire in June, and as of now, he has not indicated a desire to extend his stay at Balaidos, although club officials are still hopeful for a renewal.
Marco Garcés, Celta's sporting director, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Mingueza's future, stating, "The situation is up in the air. He knows that he has an offer from us, and we hope that he will make a decision. He has not responded yet."
Premier League Move Appears Likely
Celta's hope for a contract extension might be optimistic. It seems increasingly probable that Mingueza will depart as a free agent. This scenario would also be a blow to Barcelona, as their 50% sell-on clause would be forfeited if their former player leaves Galicia without a transfer fee.
England appears to be the most likely destination for Mingueza. While Juventus had previously shown interest, a move there is no longer considered imminent. Liverpool has also been monitoring his situation, but Arsenal could now be poised to make a move for the sought-after defender.
