Barcelona is reportedly shifting its focus from Atlético Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, deeming his acquisition too challenging for the upcoming summer. However, securing their alternative targets will also prove difficult.
On Thursday, reports emerged suggesting that Chelsea’s forward, João Félix, has become Barcelona’s primary target, with Sporting Director Deco initiating talks with the Brazilian. While a different profile of attacker compared to Alvarez, Barcelona believes Félix could offer significant contributions at a more accessible price point.
Chelsea’s Demands: €100 Million for João Félix
Catalan media outlets suggest Barcelona is hopeful of securing a deal for around €70 million. However, according to Marca, Chelsea has little inclination to sanction a sale at that valuation. The asking price for Félix, whom they consider a key player, is expected to be closer to €100 million for the Portuguese international.
Félix made his move to Stamford Bridge last summer for a reported €63.7 million. Consequently, Chelsea is keen to generate a substantial profit on the 24-year-old, who is contracted until 2033. A critical factor influencing negotiations will be Chelsea’s ability to secure Champions League qualification for the next season. Failure to do so could necessitate player sales to balance their financial accounts, potentially increasing Félix’s desire for a transfer.
Is €100 Million for Félix Justified for Barcelona?
A potential complication for Barcelona is their reported willingness to spend up to €100 million for Julian Alvarez. This suggests they have the financial capacity to meet Chelsea’s higher demands for Félix. While Barcelona undoubtedly needs to reinforce their attacking options for the upcoming season, a €100 million expenditure on Félix, who is just coming off his first season in the Champions League and has limited caps for Portugal, appears to be a significant stretch.
