Atletico Madrid’s primary objective for the upcoming summer transfer window is to sign a new central midfielder. With uncertainty surrounding the future of club captain Koke Resurreccion and the project-player status of January signings Rodrigo Mendoza and Obed Vargas, the club is keen to add another player to the squad for the next season.
Sporting director Mateu Alemany has been actively searching for a new midfielder for Diego Simeone’s team. While Atalanta’s Ederson dos Santos was initially pursued, that deal appears to be faltering, leading Atleti to turn their attention to another Brazilian talent.
Atletico Madrid showed interest in Joao Gomes during the winter transfer window, and according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, they have now initiated discussions with Wolves regarding a move for the midfielder.
Wolves Value Gomes at €46m
Reports indicate that Atletico Madrid is being asked to pay £40 million (€46 million) to secure the signing of Gomes from Wolves. Despite their recent relegation from the Premier League, Wolves are unwilling to offer discounts on their players, which may present a challenge for Atletico in negotiating a lower price.
The potential cost for Gomes appears to be similar to the figure required to sign Ederson from Atalanta. This suggests that Atletico must make a definitive decision on their preferred target. Given the relatively comparable profiles of both players, the final choice will likely depend on the preferences of manager Diego Simeone and sporting director Mateu Alemany.
It remains to be seen which midfielder Atletico Madrid will ultimately pursue. Both Ederson and Gomes are high on their list, but there is still ample time to consider other options before the summer transfer window officially opens in early July.
