Real Madrid played out a 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Friday night at La Cartuja. Notably absent from the squad was midfielder Dani Ceballos, despite teammate Aurelien Tchouameni withdrawing late due to injury. Instead, Castilla player Manuel Angel was brought into the squad for the final stages, while Thiago Pitarch replaced Tchouameni in the starting lineup. Other young players, Diego Aguado and Jorge Cestero, were also selected over the 29-year-old Ceballos.
Arbeloa sidesteps questions regarding Ceballos’ omission
Following the match, Arbeloa, who appeared displeased with the officiating, was pressed for details regarding Ceballos’ absence. When asked directly why Ceballos had not been included in the squad, Arbeloa simply stated, “I always bring the players that I consider appropriate.” He repeated the same response when questioned further about any potential issues between himself and the player.
Dani Ceballos’ Real Madrid future uncertain
The 29-year-old midfielder has been a fringe player for Real Madrid for some time, and with a year remaining on his contract, his departure from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer is anticipated. While he has frequently been linked with an exit, Ajax, under the sporting direction of Jordi Cruyff, has been mentioned as a potential suitor. Ceballos previously rejected a loan move to Olympique Marseille in late August last year. He has also expressed a desire to return to his boyhood club, Betis, though financial constraints have so far prevented such a move. It remains unclear if Betis will renew their interest this year.
