UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has shared his plans for his next fight, indicating a potential return to the octagon between August and September.
Following his latest successful title defense at UFC 325, Volkanovski, who recently signed a new contract, is eager to face a deserving challenger. His sights are set on the undefeated Movsar Evloev, currently the number one contender in the featherweight division. Evloev has built an impressive 10-fight win streak in the UFC, most recently defeating Lerone Murphy at UFC London.
In a recent interview, Volkanovski explained that while the UFC has major upcoming events like UFC Freedom 250 and UFC 329, he anticipates his next title defense will be announced once these are concluded. He is hopeful for a booking in August or September, potentially headlining UFC 331.
“I was obviously looking for anywhere from August to September,” Volkanovski stated. “September is being brought up a lot with everyone. There are dates that look good. Whatever works, weโll see.”
Volkanovski reiterated his commitment to defending his title against legitimate contenders, emphasizing that no one should be fast-tracked for a shot. He believes Movsar Evloev is the most deserving contender and is pushing for that matchup. “Obviously Movsar is the most deserving No. 1 contender,” he said. “Heโs been No. 1 contender for a while, and everyone knows me as champion. I want to fight the No. 1 guy. I want to fight the guy who deserves it, and it is Movsar.”
Volkanovski expressed confidence that this is the direction the UFC also wants to take. “Thatโs what Iโm pushing for, and Iโm pretty sure thatโs what the UFC wants anyway, so I think thatโs exactly whatโs going to happen.”
